Every year on March 8th, the world unites to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). It’s a day to acknowledge the incredible achievements of women, reflect on the challenges they still face, and recommit ourselves to building a future where equality truly reigns. At FastSpring, we know this day didn’t blossom overnight. It’s a culmination of decades of struggle, resilience, and unwavering determination. Today, we honor this day and encourage you to as well as we go on a brief journey of the rich history of IWD, a testament to the ongoing power of collective action.
From Seeds of Change to a Global Movement
The seeds of IWD were sown in the early 20th century, a time when the fight for women’s rights was gaining momentum. On March 8, 1857, women workers marched in protest of poor working conditions and subpar rights for women in their textile industry. This strike called for a shorter work day and fair living wages. Years later in 1908 on March 8th, a march by women workers in the needle trades was held to protest child labor, sweatshop working conditions, and demand women’s suffrage. Two years later in 1910, March 8th became annually observed as International Women’s Day.
A Catalyst for Change
Throughout the 20th century, IWD served as a potent catalyst for change. It became a platform for women to raise their voices on issues like voting rights, fair working conditions and pay, and access to education. In 1975, the United Nations officially recognized IWD, solidifying its global significance.
A Day of Celebration and Action
Today, IWD is celebrated in countless ways, from awe-inspiring marches to intimate gatherings. It’s an opportunity to honor trailblazing women in every field, from scientists and artists to entrepreneurs and activists. However, IWD is not just about celebration; it’s a call to action. It reminds us that the fight for gender equality is far from over. We must continue to advocate for equal opportunities, challenge harmful stereotypes, and empower women and girls everywhere. The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is “Invest in Women: Accelerating Progress” with the globally promoted hashtag, #InvestInWomen.
According to the UN, these five areas are key to pushing forward this hashtag to being obsolete:
- Investing in women, a human rights issue: Time is running out. Gender equality is the greatest human rights challenge, benefiting everyone.
- Ending poverty: Due to the COVID pandemic and conflicts, 75 million more people have fallen into severe poverty since 2020. Immediate action is crucial to prevent over 342 million women and girls living in poverty by 2030.
- Implementing gender-responsive financing: Conflicts and rising prices may lead 75% of countries to cut public spending by 2025, negatively impacting women and their essential services.
- Shifting to a green economy and care society: The current economic system disproportionately affects women. Advocates propose a shift to a green economy and care society to amplify women’s voices.
- Supporting feminist change-makers: Despite leading efforts, feminist organizations receive only 0.13% of official development assistance.
Beyond the Day
While IWD is a significant day, the pursuit of gender equality shouldn’t be confined to a single date. As a company built on inclusivity and empowerment, we strive to create a space where women can thrive throughout the year. Whether it’s fostering a culture of respect and professional development or supporting organizations promoting women’s rights, we are committed to being a part of the solution.
Together, let’s celebrate the stories of the past, embrace the progress made, and work towards a future where every woman has the chance to reach her full potential. Take the time to select a few of these virtual events to participate in this year:
