“We strongly felt FastSpring was the best partner for our business because of the flexibility of the platform and all the built-in features like VAT/taxes, subscription management, global payments, upsells/cross-sells, and branded checkouts."

Andrea Loubier, Founder and CEO

The Company

Mailbird provides easy-to-use email management software for Windows users around the world.

Mailbird got its start in 2012 as a side project to build a modern email client for Windows users while Andrea worked at a tech company in Ohio. After a few months, it was clear that Mailbird had the potential to compete in the global email software marketplace. So, Andrea decided to join her business partner in Bali to start working on Mailbird full-time.

From the beginning, Mailbird has been a remote-friendly company. Over the years, they continued to add employees from all over the world, including Europe, South East Asia, and North America.

The Challenge

As the business began to scale, the Mailbird team recognized they needed a flexible, customizable, and all-inclusive ecommerce partner to support subscription plans.

The Mailbird team launched their email software and received an overwhelmingly positive buzz from industry publications like TechCrunch, PCMag, and PCWorld.

The team had many discussions focused on finding the right solution for their business. They initially experimented with payment solutions like Stripe and PayPal; however, they quickly realized they needed more than a payment gateway to sell globally successfully. They needed an ecommerce partner that could handle multiple-facets of their business, including multi-tiered subscriptions and one-time payments. All while helping Mailbird deliver a seamless customer experience from an initial website visit to a completed purchase.

“Making the checkout experience feel like it is native to Mailbird’s brand and a seamless part of our website was very important to us.”

The Solution

Partnering with FastSpring made it possible for the Mailbird team to A/B test their entire online store to maximize conversions worldwide

After trying out other ecommerce platforms, the Mailbird team was impressed by FastSpring’s full-service ecommerce solution.

Mailbird partnered with FastSpring for a variety of reasons including:

  • The full-service platform includes all key ecommerce features like tax/VAT management, subscription management, global online payment processing, cross-sells, and upsells.
  • “The level of trust throughout the customer experience has been much higher with FastSpring.”
  • The checkout process is customizable to ensure the customer experience is completely seamless.
  • FastSpring’s platform is flexible and customizable, which makes it easy to run actionable A/B tests.

“We were doing a lot of price testing. What works in the French market is entirely different from what a small team in India might need. This is where FastSpring comes in. We can make adjustments across markets to find the right price that drives the most conversions.”

The Results

Mailbird has seen incredible growth in recent years and is working to scale their business in 2020. They are relying on FastSpring as their growth partner to help them achieve their company goals. The flexibility of the FastSpring platform is essential as they focus on creating a variety of A/B tests that will help their business optimize and grow. And the simplicity of the FastSpring platform ensures their team can focus on what they do best, which is to build great email software for small teams and businesses.

“We are continually looking for ways to optimize our business like testing pricing, adjusting subscription tiers, and creating a streamlined checkout experience. With FastSpring, we are able to achieve all this while focusing on building new features and solutions to help our customers be productive and successful.”

The team is looking to build out their offering to best serve small teams and businesses. It has been an interesting journey so far because it requires changes on every level of the business.
