If you already use a subscription management platform, you have billing schedules, dunning logic, and reporting firmly in place. When you partner with FastSpring, you get a complement to your existing setup. We act as your Merchant of Record and handle secure card data, global tax and VAT compliance, remittance, and chargeback management.
In this latest fsBuilds guide, we’ll show you how you can use FastSpring to support your subscription business, without the need to rip and replace your existing stack. Instead, our composable subscription tools allow you to integrate FastSpring into whatever existing systems you’re using today, keeping your processes in place with the addition of the benefits offered by FastSpring.
How It Works
FastSpring’s composable subscription tools are designed to offer a clear, functional separation between your platform and FastSpring. The benefit is the easy management of your customer lists and revenue data from your subscription platform while FastSpring handles all of the payment data, security, and compliance. Managed Subscriptions support your subscription logic with managed payments.
Communication Flow:
- Set up your subscription products in FastSpring, selecting the Managed Subscription option for more control.
- Customers subscribe through a FastSpring checkout on your site, prompting FastSpring to create the subscription.
- FastSpring fires a subscription.activated webhook to your server, signed with HMAC-SHA256 over the raw request body.
- Your server verifies the signature to confirm the payload came from FastSpring before it acts on the data.
- When your billing logic determines a charge, retry, or cancellation is due, your platform asks your server to call the corresponding FastSpring endpoint.
- FastSpring receives the request and returns a 200 OK, which confirms acceptance but not the charge result.
- Once the charge is processed, FastSpring triggers a subscription.charge.completed webhook, or a subscription.charge.failed webhook if the charge is unsuccessful.

All of your customers’ subscription needs will follow the same pattern. That includes plan changes, price overrides, pausing, and resuming. Your platform remains the source of truth and the subscription management tool while FastSpring executes payments, tax compliance, and chargeback management.
