When considering Paddle alternatives, the most important thing to note is that Paddle is a merchant of record (MoR).

That means it handles transactions for sellers of digital products, providing the infrastructure for global online payments while taking responsibility for tax collection and remittance, fraud prevention, and other aspects of the checkout process.

It’s a capable solution, but by no means is Paddle a universal, one-size-fits-all option.

Depending on your needs, sellers may run into a number of potential limitations with the Paddle platform:

    • Paddle doesn’t accept as many local/regional payment methods as other MoR partners.
    • Other MoRs boast higher conversion and approval rates.
    • Paddle is less experienced than other MoR partners.

In this guide, we discuss five service providers that function (in whole or in part) as alternatives to Paddle that may help you avoid some of these limits, starting with a look at our solution, FastSpring.

Are you looking for a Paddle alternative that will partner with you to grow your business internationally? FastSpring is an experienced merchant of record that provides an all-in-one payments, subscriptions, and automated tax compliance platform for digital-first businesses, including VAT and sales tax management, payment localization, and consumer support. 5 Top Paddle Alternatives for 2026

    FastSpring

Unlike many Paddle competitors, FastSpring is a merchant of record (MoR) and the most direct alternative to Paddle. As an MoR, our platform handles a lot more than just standalone payment gateways or subscription management software solutions.

FastSpring includes global payment processing and recurring revenue management, of course, but the platform also takes care of the end-to-end checkout process, including optimization of your checkout flow, collecting and remitting sales tax and VAT, localization, fraud prevention, global compliance, and more.

    FastSpring’s Advantages Over Paddle

The main benefit to partnering with a merchant of record is the infrastructure. MoRs are complete payment solutions that enable you to outsource the entire checkout process, as well as liability for sales tax and VAT remittance, fraud prevention, and tax compliance.

That means that once you implement FastSpring, you’re ready to start selling — in more than 240 jurisdictions, with support for 21+ languages and the most popular payment methods — almost instantly.

Paddle is also an MoR, but its functionality isn’t as robust, nor is the platform as effective as FastSpring.

To compare, our ecommerce solution is built to cover all your bases, so you can focus on building a great product. That’s why FastSpring includes a deeper, more robust set of features than Paddle.

    • FastSpring supports the most popular global payment methods, including additional alternative methods Paddle doesn’t accept such as Amazon Pay, Pix Automatico for subscriptions, and some Brazilian local cards.
    • With our JavaScript Store Builder Library (SBL), you can completely customize, brand, and streamline your checkout flow, building trust with buyers and eliminating friction. The SBL includes tracking and testing tools to help monitor and improve your conversion rate, too.
FastSpring Delivers Industry-Leading Approval and Conversion Rates

FastSpring’s platform processes transactions locally, includes best-in-class intelligent payment routing, and has quick, automatic failover processing to minimize involuntary churn.

Plus, with our JavaScript library and three different customizable checkout experiences, you can quickly and easily build the best-converting checkout flow for your business.

FastSpring Is a More Experienced, Knowledgeable Partner for Your SaaS Business

    Stripe

A screenshot of Paddle alternative Stripe's home page.

Stripe is best known as an online payment processor that enables you to accept credit cards, debit cards, and mobile payments. The company offers add-on products that include additional features such as:

    • Checkout.
    • Digital invoices.
    • Subscription and recurring payment collection.
    • In-person payments.
    • Revenue metrics and real-time analytics.
    • Fraud and risk management.

It can also be used to sell physical products, both online and in person, with Stripe Terminal serving as a point of sale (PoS) solution.

The most important difference to note is that Stripe’s pricing model involves a core Payments product and many additional optional add-ons and packages. The core Payments platform doesn’t include MoR services — and, because of that, its pricing looks a lot lower to begin with.

Stripe purchased Lemon Squeezy in 2024 and has since built an MoR product called Managed Payments, but it’s just now being released (in early 2026). Since it’s new, little is known about how it performs or whether early adopters will be satisfied with the offering — coverage is also currently limited to around 80 countries as of this writing.

    Verifone’s 2Checkout

A screenshot of Paddle competitor 2Checkout's homepage.

2Checkout offers a number of different products and services:

    • The core 2Sell product is a payment gateway that enables sellers to accept one-time online and mobile payments.
    • 2Subscribe is a subscription management system that offers features such as recurring billing subscription models and churn prevention.
    • 2Monetize is the most similar product to Paddle. With this package, 2Checkout acts as the MoR, and sellers gain features for conversion rate optimization (CRO), sales tax and VAT collection and remittance, and fraud prevention.

    PayPal Enterprise Payments (Formerly Braintree)

A screenshot of PayPal's landing page for PayPal Enterprise Payments.

PayPal Enterprise Payments (formerly Braintree) is a payment processor that enables customers to accept online payments via credit, debit, Venmo (in the U.S.), digital wallets (Apple Pay and Google Pay), and — of course — PayPal.

PayPal also offers merchant accounts, as well as:

    • Payouts.
    • Recurring billing.
    • Optimized checkout flow.
    • Risk management.
    • Automatic payment retries.
    • Reporting and pricing analytics.
    • Third-party integrations for recurring billing software, accounting, and more.

    Maxio (Formerly Chargify and SaaSOptics)

A screenshot of Paddle alternative Maxio's homepage.

Maxio is neither an MoR nor a payment gateway. Instead, the company bills itself as billing and financial reporting software for B2B SaaS, and the featureset is much more focused on back-end operations.

The core Maxio product enables users to automate recurring billing. Other features include:

    • Usage-based billing.
    • A/R management.
    • Advanced revenue management.
    • Expense amortization.
    • Third-party integrations for payment processing, CRM, accounting, and more.

The most important thing to remember: With Maxio, you’ll still need to implement another, separate solution to manage taxes and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paddle Alternatives

What’s the Difference Between a Merchant of Record and a Payment Processor?

A payment processor such as Stripe enables you to move money — it handles the technical layer of charging a card and depositing funds into your account. But you remain the legal seller in every transaction, so you’re the one responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax and VAT, maintaining compliance, and handling fraud liability.

To compare, a merchant of record (MoR) — such as Paddle and FastSpring — becomes the legal seller on your behalf, meaning it owns the liability and takes the lead on tax registration, calculation, and remittance in every jurisdiction where your customers live, fraud management, and compliance.

For a small team selling globally, that’s a significant operational burden removed.

Is Stripe a Good Alternative to Paddle?

It depends on what you’re trying to replace. Stripe is a capable monetization infrastructure, but it’s a toolkit, not a turnkey solution.

If you’re looking for a Paddle alternative that handles global tax and regulatory compliance, Stripe may be an option — but the platform’s MoR solution is brand new and untested as of this writing.

Which Paddle Alternative Is Best for SaaS Startups?

For most SaaS companies and indie startups that need a true merchant of record (MoR) with mature global infrastructure, FastSpring is the strongest alternative.

It’s purpose-built for digital-first businesses and handles the full compliance stack — including VAT, GST, sales tax, and taxes on digital services across 240+ jurisdictions — without requiring you to stay on top of ever-changing regulations in every jurisdiction where your customers live.

Beyond compliance, FastSpring includes a customizable branded checkout, subscription management, the most popular global payment methods, and a user-friendly self-service customer portal out of the box. That’s meaningful for a small team that can’t afford to stitch together five-plus disparate tools.

Do Paddle Alternatives Handle Sales Tax and VAT Automatically?

It depends on which type of alternative you choose:

    – Merchant of record platforms — like FastSpring and Paddle itself — handle tax collection, calculation, and remittance on your behalf.
    – Straight payment processors like PayPal and simple billing solutions like Maxio typically do not handle sales tax and VAT.
    – Alternatives like Stripe and 2Checkout may or may not act as the MoR and handle sales tax and VAT, depending on the product or package you select.

In summary, if hands-off global tax compliance is a priority, look specifically for platforms that describe themselves as a merchant of record (MoR).

Can I Migrate From Paddle to Another Platform Without Losing Subscription Data?

The short answer is yes, but the process requires planning.

The challenge is that subscription data — billing cycles, plan details, trial end dates, and payment methods — lives in Paddle’s system.

Payment methods, in particular, can’t simply be exported and imported due to PCI compliance rules. Customers’ saved cards are tokenized within Paddle’s PSP (which can be locked), and those tokens don’t transfer to another processor without multi-party collaboration.

At FastSpring, our team is happy to help with migration support.
